What kind of lumber should I use for building raised beds for vegetables?
<< What is the purpose of raised beds in a vegetable garden? Aluminum stock tanks for raised garden beds? >>
Raised beds will be in the SF Bay Area and I have been advised that treated lumber is toxic and that most untreated will rot too fast. What can I use that will hold up for a decade or more?
NOT CEDAR…AS IT SOMETIMES REACTS TO CERTAIN TYPES OF VEGETATION AS IT BREAKS DOWN…I USE HARD PLASTIC SHEETS OR ACRYLIC PANELS…YOU CAN ANCHOR THEM WITH STAKES OF WOOD …BUT WHAT GREAT IS YOU CAN HOSE THEM DOWN WHEN EVERY YOU NEED TO AND MOVE YOUR BEDS AS YOU NEED TO…GUESS WHAT MY NEIGHBOR RECYCLES TIRES FOR THIS…JUST CUTS THEM WITH A POWER SAW AND MAKES FUN SHAPES…HAVE FUN…I’VE BEEN GARDENING OVER 10 YEARS AND I LOVE IT!

Plastic lumber won’t rot and has no chemical treatment that will leach out and get into your veggies.

There isn’t any kind of untreated wood that will last that long. Use another product.

Plastic lumber (trex, timbertech, etc.) will certainly hold up, just make certain it’s well supported with vertical members to prevent bowing (most composite lumber has low tensile strength, which is why it can be bent into such cool shapes). I think the earlier poster had the best idea with the acrylic sheets though- I’m going to try that at home
