Why do people usually plant vegetables on raised beds? Can’t I plant vegetable directly in the ground?

It all depends on the quality of your native soil. I live in N. Texas and we have clay for soil, so we can’t plant directly into the ground as nothing would grow. We have to amend the soil with compost and shale and a whole bunch of other ammendments to grow anything. So we use the raised beds, put in compost and high quality soil, mix well, fertilize and plant.

You can plant directly in the ground, the raised beds make it easier to weed, you can add any needed soil amendments and water will be better utilized.
Many of mine I plant directly in the ground but for some plants I put in the raised beds, its really a matter of personal choice.

you can use the raised beds to use the sq. foot method of gardening. This system will grow crops using only 20% of the space you use with straight rows, makes it easier to weed and also causes less bending

Raised beds provides good drainage, are easy to access, easier to control weeds and allows you to amend the local soil to ideal growing conditions. The drawback is that you have to irrigate more often but can produce a better yield then directly in flat ground. It’s the amendments and improved drainage that provides a better medium for your plants.
