Raised Vegetable Garden – Toxic Railway Ties

<< Uncategorized  Computer Controlled Raised Vegetable Garden Overflowing with Produce >>

When constructing a raised vegetable garden railway ties (aka sleepers) are often used for the walls. However, if the wood has been treated, then the chemicals in the wood can contaminate the soil and poison your vegetables. Its such an easy mistake to make that I created this post to point out some facts you need to know: -

  1. There are various types of railway ties/sleepers available such as “treated” or “reclaimed”
  2. Treated and reclaimed wood is likely to have been coated with creosote – so avoid these at all costs
  3. Ideally you need to be looking for an untreated, new railway tie/sleeper to be sure. You may have to seal them yourself though.

As you can see from the link below, this kind of timber gives a rustic look which adds to the charm of your garden. In this example it seems like plastic has been used to keep the sleeper from contaminating the soil.
